Louie the Lightning Bug® Program Licensing

For more than three decades, Louie the Lightning Bug® has been associated with electrical safety by children across North America. Louie was created in 1983 by two major electrical utilities for an innovative children's electrical safety campaign.

The program was syndicated to other utilities the next year. Components include a series of animated television commercials, more than 50 different electrical safety handout items, a safety video, a computer software package, and live theatrical performances.

Moore Syndication is the exclusive distributer of Louie the Lightning Bug® products and licensed services. Any utility may purchase and distribute Louie the Lightning Bug handout materials; however, the program can be utilized to its most effective extent through its licensed components.

View and Purchase Louie Products

Utility licensees pay an annual fee for the rights to broadcast Louie television and radio commercials, purchase Louie the Lightning Bug® costumes and parade balloons, and to use the Louie character for their own, unique communications programs. (The use of the character for customized programs is subject to certain guidelines established by the copyright holder.)

A listing of licensee benefits and restrictions is contained in the booklet, Guidelines for Louie the Lightning Bug® Program Licensees and Users of Louie Servicemark Products.

License fees are based on the number of commercials used. Licenses are granted in one-year increments. Renewal fees (after the first year) are usually less than the initial licensing fee. Additionally, a limited license may be purchased by utilities wishing to use only non-broadcast portions of the program. Descriptions of products and commercials available to licensed utilities follow.

PRODUCTS AVAILABLE TO LICENSEES:

Louie Costume

Originally developed for Louie the Lightning Bug plays, the costume features a jumpsuit style body. The light bulb pod is constructed of open foam material covered by yellow Antron fabric, a set of false arms are attached to this portion. Green fabric wings are attached to the silver vinyl vest. The animated running shoes are foam sculpted, have heavy-duty rubber soles and removable white Jogknit covers for easy cleaning. The antron covered head contains a harness for the performer to wear. Vision is through the mouth. Hands are covered by four-fingered character gloves with a ring cuff.

The standard costume is constructed to fit wearers approximately 6' tall and up to approximately 210 pounds. If you need a costume to fit wearers of a different size, please indicate a desired height and weight when you place your order.

Parade Balloon

A great way to gain exposure is through a community event or parade. This product can add to the equity your utility has already invested in Louie educational programs. This helium-filled balloon is constructed of 18 mil. rubberized vinyl. It’s big! At 30-feet tall, the parade balloon requires 34 workers to control tether lines during a parade. When stationary, lines are tied to sand bags. Five thousand cubic feet of helium are required to fill the balloon. The Parade Balloon incorporates separate chambers. The head and body, arms, wings and feet are inflated separately. This helps with the aerodynamics and flight of the balloon. This balloon can last up to 15 years if properly maintained.

Allow four months for construction. Prepayment is required.

Because of the size of this product, the manufacturer offers a separate optional maintenance agreement for storage and minor repairs after each event. The manufacturer additionally can be contracted to send an expert to supervise the balloon’s inflation and deflation and supervise movement along a parade route.

NOTE: Parade balloon will be similar to, but may not be exact match of balloon shown in picture.

Cold Air Balloon

This 10 foot high Louie figure is in a seated position. The cold air balloon is inflated with an air blower, and inflation sleeves seal with rubber bands. A constant air supply is not required. This feature makes it convenient to transport the balloon in a truck bed during parades and events. The Cold Air Balloon is made of 18 mil vinyl. Separate air chambers are incorporated in the design for greater support. The head, body and arms are inflated separately.
